Benefits of Vitamin D for Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women
Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, as well as functionality within the body’s nerves, muscles, and immune system. Vitamin D also helps to keep the mom’s bones strong when pregnant, as well as the baby’s as it forms healthy bones and body.
The recommended dose of vitamin D for pregnant women is 15 micrograms (0.015 milligrams) each day during pregnancy. This amount can be obtained from food or prenatal vitamins. Vitamin D packed foods include:
- Oily fish (i.e. salmon, sardines, and herring)
- Red meat
- Egg yolks
- Certain breakfast cereals (check the label)
