Benefits of Vitamin D for Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women

Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium, as well as functionality within the body’s nerves, muscles, and immune system. Vitamin D also helps to keep the mom’s bones strong when pregnant, as well as the baby’s as it forms healthy bones and body.

The recommended dose of vitamin D for pregnant women is 15 micrograms (0.015 milligrams) each day during pregnancy. This amount can be obtained from food or prenatal vitamins. Vitamin D packed foods include:

  • Oily fish (i.e. salmon, sardines, and herring)
  • Red meat
  • Egg yolks
  • Certain breakfast cereals (check the label)

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please see a medical professional if there is a concern about adequate intake of nutrients during pregnancy.
