Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids needed for the body to function. These fatty acids act as an energy source to aid your heart, lungs, blood vessels, and immune system.

During pregnancy, consuming omega-3 fatty acids becomes vital. Omega-3 is a critical building block of the fetal brain and retina, as well as prevents perinatal depression.

Nutrients can be obtained from omega-3 fatty acids dietary supplements or from foods consumed from our diet. Omega-3 rich foods include:

  • Mackerel
  • Salmon
  • Flax seeds
  • Walnuts

The recommended intake of omega-3 for pregnant women is 150 grams (5 ounces) weekly.
